Some say he studied cinematography in the Soviet Union and returned to Nigeria in the mids to start his own film company, Wilfilms. Some say he was a lawyer with a degree from a university in Great Britain. Others portray him as a businessman who for years worked on government contracts in Enugu, Nigeria. By attempting to speak with Onyeabor himself, and by talking to people who seem to have firsthand knowledge, Luaka Bop has been trying to construct an accurate biography of him for the past 18 months One thing that's undisputable is that Onyeabor's music is utterly unique and ahead of its time.
Triple album in gatefold sleeve. Includes digital download code. Their creative cannibalism produced psychedelic gems unlike anything else, and they sound as relevant today as anything happening anywhere. They were exactly what their name implies--a mutant genetic recombination of elements of John Cage, The Beatles, and bossa nova.
A creature that was too strange and beautiful to live for very long, but too strong to ever fade away. It lives again. Be prepared. DIA 36 BABY II There remain only copies for sale, all on limited edition pink in black vinyl. Despite his young age, Uri Brauner Kinrot has become one of the most influential figures in Israeli music, and has gained vast experience of sensual sweat and dripping charisma, with live performances on stage at the most important festivals in the world: Glastonbury, Roskilde, WOMEX, SXSW LP more.
LORKE PADAM Edith Piaf in front of an audience, she was both grand dame and one of the girls or guys, depending on who you were. Here stands Piaf, her voice and her audience full of pathos, pain, and grace.
She died at 47 of liver cancer after years of alcohol abuse and pill addiction, and it's reported that her last words were "Every damn thing you do in this life, you have to pay for". While that's a hard way to live, her pain and emotion rang true in song, and there's not a better or more gut-wrenching torch singer in history than Ms. Collecting some of her most famous recordings, including the immortal "La Vie En Rose", "Tout Fout Le Camp", and "Le Vagabond", this is a brilliant retrospective of her career and a perfect entry point into the world of one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century.
One of the last true voices of the "Cafe Aman" era of Greek-Turkish music before the art form all but disappeared. Achingly emotive singing accompanied by lyra, oud, kanonaki and guitar, ranging from pitch-black dirges to feverish climax. Contains extensive liner notes and full lyrics.
Co-release with Olvido Records. Expected for many years by his many admirers, the new studio album by the most flamboyant of french singers - ENFIN!. It goes beyond the craziest expectations. This new release, the first in 28 years, contains eight songs and three instrumental pieces. From big bands to folk disco, pop and symphonic music, the titles are blossoming in a great diversity.
Subtly eclectic and truly surprising. Largely pastoral and often nomadic, Peulh- or Fula- speaking peoples are found from Senegal to Ethiopia but predominate in the Sahel region of West Africa. Awesome Tapes From Africa is proud to release Poulo's newest recording of highly virtuosic folk-pop, fresh from the studio, broadcasting her vision of Peulh music beyond the grazing grounds and central markets of her remote home region in southwestern Mali.
It's not very common to find a female singer performing publicly among the Peulh. But Poulo's mother's co-wife is Inna Baba Coulibaly, who is a celebrated singer most Malian music fans know. Coulibaly herself was brought into music by forces outside her control when a regional music contest required an entry from her village and she was chosen to be a singer. So, set Album) motion by a surprising series of events, young Poulo's entree into the music world was auspicious as she gained popularity across the region.
After several locally released tapes and CDs, this record is Poulo's first internationally distributed record. Trunk Records presents the first reissue of Tam Originally issued in a one-time pressing as part of Askanasy's s touring Braziliana show, Tam It's stunning both as a historical touchstone and as a standalone musical triumph. And the more one listens to Tam This reissue comes at a time when, in a world saturated with information, few important things have escaped attention and reappraisal.
Finding anything new and genuinely incredible is a rare feat. This is a prime example of amazing, influential music that until now has remained hidden.
In producing this reissue, spurred on by Peterson's request, Trunk Records found that no master recordings could be located. The original s label showed no interest in a reissue, but Ed Motta, the renowned artist, producer, and record collector, agreed to transcribe his original copy on his EMT deck and send the files from Brazil to the UK. The sound was not in the best condition, and the original s vinyl pressing has several musical inconsistencies. Trunk Records painstakingly worked toward a suitable sonic balance, making sure to maintain the bright and driving original sound without cleaning it up so much that the life of the music was diminished.
Accordingly, the vinyl edition of reissue was pressed with some very slight surface noise -- any more cleaning would interfere with the true wax sound. FA-EU-A ONIKA SANTA Thami Mdluli's production project had young and old dancing to a sound that sought to unite Blacks within Southern Africa. Ideacin, widely considered a masterpiece of '70s Uruguayan rock, achieved huge sales upon its initial release.
This remastered reissue is pressed on gram vinyl and includes an insert with an updated biography by historian Fernando Pelaez, author of De las Cuevas al Solis, a history of Uruguayan rock from to the mid-'70s. Edition of The original release excluded the song "Hroe de Papel," which is included here. This remastered reissue of this essential record offers a window into the evolution of '70s Latin American rock. Rather than trying to fuse recognizable musical styles with vocals, Ame Debout illustrates Alpes's relationship with Ribeiro as something instantly more elemental and complicated.
ALPES 1 ALPES 2 The album marked a change in the musical direction of the band, evolving into a more cosmic sound achieved by way of much improvised propulsive energy. Paix floats, shrouded by a strong, uniquely medieval, Gallic folk influence. PAIX Dutch import.
Rully Shabara extreme vocals coupled with Wukir Suryadi's deft instrumentals and homemade instruments produce one of the most profound examples of experimental via traditional music happening anywhere today. By weaving Indonesian folkloric moods with various shades of modern genre hybrids, Senyawa has been navigating unexplored musical terrain for more than a decade.
Sujud, their premier release on the Sublime Frequencies label, is the latest chapter of this very special and singular sound of the past, present, and future. The basic theme of the record can be summed up with one extremely powerful Bahasa Indonesian word, "tanah", which translates to "soil-ground-land-earth". Shabara's vocals are an expressive force, conjuring spirits from the soil with a deep humility and respect for the land and their existence in the universe.
Suryadi has built a new guitar for these tracks and pushes the Senyawa sound into new territory, utilizing delay, loops, and other effects creating grounded backdrops of folk metal, punk attitudinal, and droning earthscapes - providing Shabara the perfect context to explore his whispering poetry and jagged, sharp-as-a-kris animistic powers.
There is simply no other sound like it and Sublime Frequencies is thrilled to present this new direction in their discography. Limited LP with two-sided insert featuring lyrics in Bahasa Indonesian.
A true cultural giant, this Rough Guide showcases a unique talent that spawned a musical revolution. MEGH The album features Ben Tzur's compositions, which combine ecstatic, devotional Sufi qawwal musical traditions and his native Hebrew.
JUNUN ROKED HU JULUS AHUVI AZOV In the history of Afro-Colombian culture, Son Palenque is without a doubt an exceptional band, and its history has a place at the very heart of ancestral palenquera music as well as at the musical intersection between Africa and Colombia, which took place on Colombia's Caribbean coast in the '70s and '80s and which continues today through champeta, a musical genre and dance that also bears a strong African influence.
The members of Son Palenque band grew up in rural communities fixed in time, with deep musical roots, duels between tambora players and a legendary musical profusion of traditional musicians that built the foundations of today's Afro-Colombian music. Later they all migrated to the city and bit by bit made a place for themselves. In they recorded their first single for the Fonobosa record label. Later on the band signed with the label Felito Records, in Barranquilla, which during the '80s produced some of the finest gems of psychedelic and Afro-roots music of the time.
With Felito Records a new era began for the group. They then recorded three LPs for the CBS music label, and in the mid-'90s Son Palenque lost its recording contract, The group was resurrected in for a song with guitarist Sekou Diabate, legendary leader of the band Bebeya Jazz. Subsequently they recorded for the same label, under the production of Lucas Silva, the record Ma Kamajan Ri Musika Ri Palengue, released inwhich marked the folkloric group's resurrection. And so Son Palenque continues to play, 30 years after its foundation.
This compilation of LP music from the '70s and '80s makes clear their inimitable, groundbreaking legacy. BORO PORRY AISSE Like many Syrian musicians, he made his name as a singer for wedding parties in the region, with hundreds of cassettes and CDs documenting his performances distributed throughout the country.
These, along with several studio albums, earned him legendary status in the Syrian dabke scene throughout the s and early s. After his breakthrough folk-hit Khataba, Omar gained wider recognition throughout the Arab world. After collecting his tapes for a decade, Sublime Frequencies released the first compilation of Omar Souleyman tracks to be distributed in the West.
The success of Highway to Hassakeand the enthusiastic online reaction to the promotional clip for his track Leh Jani, led to Omar being invited to tour the UK and Europe in the summer of It would be his first time performing or travelling outside of the Arab world.
He and his group, comprised of two longtime collaborators - Rizan Sa'id on keyboards, and electric saz player Ali Shaker - set off on a six-week Sublime Album) tour with label-mates Group Doueh. By the end ofOmar had proven that his unique and charismatic delivery of Syrian electrified folkloric dabke, Iraqi choubi and Arabic shaabi had the ability to appeal to the most diverse of western audiences.
His success has continued, with further tours throughout Europe, America and Australia drawing rave reviews and leaving a trail of fervor across the globe. The rise of Omar's success has transcended the wedding halls and cassette stalls of Syria and slipped into western popular consciousness.
Despite there being no shortage of musical talent in Syria, dabke and otherwise, Omar Souleyman is the first Syrian musical export to have won the hearts of westerners and Arabs alike on this scale.
His trademark checkered khaffya, sunglasses and elegant jalaba are not uncommon male attire in the Arab world, but for years in the west, it is that exact image which has been excessively demonized. Perhaps one of the most striking achievements of Omar's rise has been watching that iconic image transformed from comic book villainy to something positively regal.
The recordings on Haflat Gharbia - The Western Concerts, Omar Souleyman's fourth release on Sublime Frequencies, represent an hour of the best moments from the western tours between andcaptured in striking fidelity and intensity. Fans will recognize familiar songs, as well as previously unreleased material presented here for the first time, in what is the biggest sounding Omar record yet. The entire minute cassette album was recorded live to tape in at the home studio of producer Zuhir Maksi in the village of Ras Al Ain in northeastern Syria.
Many of Omar's early tapes were recorded in this fashion to replicate the feeling of his live wedding party performances while minimizing the inherent recording chaos and distractions of those parties. The full track, featured here, reveals plenty more twists and turns from synth and saz during its hypnotic course. The song was further truncated for Omar's debut Western compilation, Highway To Hassake and a concurrently assembled internet video clip of the track helped earn Omar his first attention in the West.
The album begins with a lively introduction followed by a majestic mawal, before showcasing the incredible uptempo and previously-unreleased "Salamat Galbi Bidek. This complete version of the original Leh Jani cassette album features an hour of music, and ensures an all-night Syrian dabke party no matter where on Earth you rest the needle.
Completely setting politics aside, Souleyman consciously shares this personal ode to his native country with an emphasis on his emotional connection to the land and people but not without heartache in view of the nation's current state. My soul is wounded and it's like having dust in my eyes," Souleyman says. Not just your average Malian LP, Ampsa features has to be heard to be believed organ, hypnotic guitar and amazing sweet vocals. A truly great LP and must have for fans of Malian music.
A faithful reproduction of the original with the addition of liner notes by Florent Mazzoleni. DJAMA BEN KAANI ZIGDA TALA A. GOTAM It was mixed by David Odlum who won a Grammy for his work with Tinariwen. The band's previous album Chatma was a major breakthrough, both artistically and commercially.
With the new album the band is still blazing, still asking new questions, still proving that their reputation as one of West Africa's most innovative bands, is completely deserved. The cry of suffering and the yell of rebellion. Power and resistance.
Kidal is pure Tuareg rock'n'roll. Pure Tamikrest. Straight from Zambia, we have My Ancestors. A tough rock and roll masterpiece like no other. Over ridden fuzz guitars, pop melodies and even a Black Sabbathesque sounding song. Comes in an old school "tip on" cover. Must be heard to be believed. ZAWAL ANINA All tracks newly re-mastered.
E ANTI- For Tinariwen, the geographical location of the studio proved to be particularly propitious in terms of creativity. And the human climate was just as favorable. Sessions were also recorded in Morocco, where the band were accompanied by local musicians, in a land where they are considered musical legends. Lovers of those sensual yet abrasive riffs that are Tinariwen's signature won't be disappointed. But neither will those who love their funky, danceable side, which comes through loud and clear.
ITTUS Now their new record Emmaar returns to their roots, delivering stripped-down dirges and effervescent electric anthems. Double Lp in Gatefold Sleeve. Includes free CD of the entire album. The Saharan blues band have performed the world over bringing their signature mix of hypnotic rock guitar with the traditional instruments and vocal stylings of their native Tuareg roots to their adoring fans. But this night in Paris would be different, and this live recording captures the magic.
TINDE Where previous albums had been issued only on cassette for regional markets, The Radio Tisdas Sessions was released on CD and distributed worldwide. It saw the group working with British producer Justin Adams and French collective Lo'Jo, but despite the outside influence, there was no softening of their sound: hard guitar licks and wild rhythms color their spare, dust-beaten music.
Recorded in Bamako with his specially assembled down-home ngoni group, Savane is Ali's testament, a powerful reaffirmation of his umbilical link to his Malian musical roots. Acclaimed as his finest album, Savane is both one of the most traditional and seemingly the most blues-drenched of Ali's recordings.
The record occupied Ali right into his last weeks, and he finally declared himself satisfied with it shortly before his death in March It has now been remastered specially for this first time ever vinyl release! A brilliant collection of songs from the father of desert blues on blistering form with his home town group from Mali, available for the first time on vinyl. The classic album stunningly remixed and remastered from the original analogue master tapes with an exclusive unreleased track 'Takamba'.
I GO KA YENNA PEACE MALI Named after the large traditional Ultima Batucada ( Ultima Batucada) - Sérgio Mendes - Alegria (Vinyl used to gather people in the Malian region of Gao, Toubalbero is a danceable, dynamic, and despite the region's significant political challenges, joyous album. But South African songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist "Om" Alec Khaoli managed to do just that with his band Umoja.
See history tree below. Featured on this page loosely in order of first recording if not record release as possible.
